This scimitar was purchased new in 1981 from Smiths Marine in Baltimore Maryland, it remained in the Baltimore area, and on the Delaware river, for 26 years. The boat was traded in on the purchase of a bigger, later model boat, by it's original owner, to JB Marine, near Chesapeake City, Maryland in June 2006. The boat set in a storage yard for over a year, during that time the cover had blown off the boat, some parts had been robbed off the motor, and it was sitting on a single axle trailer with a flat tire, no lights, and a broken winch tower. I bought the boat from JB Marine in September 2007 on a Saturday, spent the rest of that day and most of the next, working on the trailer to get it home to Oklahoma City, Ok. It was a 3241 mile round trip to
The hull of the boat was in great condition, all the original hardware except the "t" top latches, the 6 way electric seat was there but the motors wouldn't work, all other components were there, and even the original shag carpet. The gel coat was ok, but faded pretty bad from sitting outside in the weather, the back seat frame was rotting and the seat cushions were soaked with rain water, the Vinyl was faded. The trailer didn't really fit the boat, but I put new tires, bearings, lights, and rigged the winch tower so it would be safe for the trip back to Oklahoma City.
A few pic's after a stop at the local Car Wash, and a Serious vacuum job
After the Long Trip home I was anxious to get it in the water for a test run. I took the back seat out, installed a battery, carb, distributer, and serviced the out-drive, it fired up and sounded pretty good so we took it to the lake. the Fox wanted to drive it first, she done real good, here's a video Click Here
The lake test went pretty good, then it was time to go to work on it and make it pretty, so I called my friend at the body shop
My friend at the body shop mixed some rich gold flake in some automotive clear coat and sprayed the top-side of the hull, it looked pretty good, but I never liked the different colors in the flake he added, but I could live with it a while. Then I went to work on the rest of the boat, I built new seat frames, new foam, had the back seat upholstered, Re-done the front seats, new frames and foam, removed the electric seat box and added a pedestal for the drivers seat. Built a new transom, new stringers, and re-enforced the stringers with 24 ounce woven roven mat, added the new floor, injected foam, completely filling the void under the floor, over-laid the complete floor with the 24 ounce woven roven mat and ground it all down smooth, glassed in the side panels, new carpet
The bottom of the hull had been coated with an anti-fouling paint that had to come off, with razor blades, I repainted the bottom with polyurethane
I sold the 357 cid motor out of the boat so I could build the new 387 cid "stroker" it's been test run, all is well, in the boat now, almost ready for a test run. While the motor was out, I stripped off the old automotive clear coat that had been sprayed on the top-side, sanded the original gel coat smooth, and sprayed a good coat of clear gel coat mixed with some gold metal flake very close to the original color of the boat, after the flake was sprayed, I sprayed a generous 4 more coats of clear gel coat, sanded it down to a gloss, then polished it out, it looks really good, and produces a nice sparkle in the sunlight.
Last year, I made a modification to the nose of the drive, it made a noticeable difference in the speed and performance. This year, before the gel coat job was finished, I enlarged the exhaust holes in the transom to accommodate the new 4" stainless exhaust tube's with the diverters, these tube's and diverters can easily be removed and just run the exhaust through the thru-hull tips, but it sure would be loud. the backwash preventers are in the thru-hull tip's, A drunk throwed a brick and broke the old windshield, I have just recently had a brand new molded 3/8 thick winshield made
The boat looks great, and is just about ready for a lake test with the new "stroker" motor, but when I get it dialed in, I'll be pulling it out, installing the original 260 Mercruiser and drive for the sale.
